Christmas Culture in Poland

Poland largely consists of Catholics and Christmas is a very famous festival. Traditionally according to the history its a day for fasting and abstinenece and no Meat. A special Christmas Eve meal is made called "Wigilia" pronounced as vee-ghee-lee-uh. Its a meat free food and it usually contains Barszcz also known as Beetroot soup, Uszka (mushroom ravioli), Pasta dumplings filled with cheeze. 

Usually Christmas tree is put up,and decorated with lots of light and glass and decoration balls and lot more. Glittering hair and stars are put up and used for decoration.

The fasting is till the first star shows up in the sky. Usually every one is very hungry as its no food or fasting on Christmas. Once they see the first star in the sky, they gather and start the meal. 

Traditionally at the beginning of the meal, large wafer biscuit called an 'Oplatek', which usually would have a picture of Mary, Joseph and Jesus on it. And a big meal shall begin with 12 dishes of fish mostly. 

After the meal, children find the gifts under the tree and play around. The candles on the Christmas tree are lit up. 

After all this, Christmas eve is finished by going to Church.
